ERIKA TROTZIG — Galería Reus | Contemporary Art Galleries in Palma, Mallorca

Galería Reus is a contemporary art gallery based in Mallorca whose trajectory dates back to 2003. Over the years, the project has evolved through different forms of collaboration and programming, consolidating itself as a space dedicated to the research, production, and dissemination of contemporary art.

The gallery works with emerging and mid-career artists, supporting the development of their practices while creating a context for dialogue, experimentation, and reflection around the diverse forms of contemporary artistic expression. Its program is characterized by a diversity of languages and approaches, as well as an interest in establishing connections between the local artistic scene and the international context.

From Mallorca, Galería Reus aims to actively contribute to the contemporary cultural ecosystem by promoting projects that encourage exchange, artistic research, and the development of new perspectives.

Biography

Erika Trotzig (born Malmö, Sweden) is a London based artist working in sculpture. She graduated with a BA in Fashion and MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins. Erika was awarded the Gilbert Bayes Award for emerging sculptors from the Royal Society of Sculptors in 2023 and Cass Art Prize award for 3D work 2024. Underpinning Trotzig’s practice are feelings of instability and vulnerability: she is interested in the teetering moment before the collapse, in the discarded, the forgotten and the rejected She makes deliberately un-monumental objects that play with and question the possibilities within the medium of sculpture itself, whilst investigating how personal experience can be communicated through form.
She is interested in the politics surrounding memory and the complex interplay between personal recollection and societal narratives; she investigates the vulnerability of bodies and the complexities of desire- power structures and body politics.
She works with salvaged wood, foam from old cushions, cloth dipped in Jesmonite, and casts works in latex and silicone. Knitting, traditionally associated with domesticity and comfort, takes on a subversive role in her work, challenging established notions of artmaking and craftsmanship; forms filled with sand or concrete: globular, transgressive forms, that creeps across edges and traverse boundaries. Trotzig’s works are humorous, un-heroic and absurd. Mirroring aspects of architecture the work evolves into space-dividers, obstructions, and fragments. Often anthropomorphic in character they occupy a space between the human and the architectural, presenting tragicomic impressions in their futile struggle to hold themselves together
